Proposals to reduce the number of MPs

Earlier this month, the Boundary Commission for Wales published their initial proposals for reducing the number of MPs in Wales and across the UK.  I welcome the proposed changes that would affect residents in the Vale of Glamorgan.   The review of all parliamentary constituencies means that the number of seats in Wales would be reduced from 40 to 30.  Government wants to reduce the total number of MPs from 650 to 600 and create seats of roughly equal size.  Currently the Vale of Glamorgan has some 71,000 constituents, whereas other constituencies in Wales may only have 50,000 voters or less.  This review is about equality and fairness across the UK so everyone’s vote carries an equal weight regardless of where they live.
