Defending Trial by Jury

Today, The Times splashed on its front page the plans backed by the Magistrates Association to get rid of trial by jury in 'either-way' cases that can be tried in the magistrates or Crown court.I have written for The Times tomorrow, accessible here, defending Britain's ancient right to elect jury trial - which dates back to Magna Carta - and setting out its modern relevance as a bulwark against the arbitrary abuse of state power....
