Proposed Changes to Calder Valley’s Constituency Boundaries
The Boundary Commission for England have issued a report in which they propose ways of achieving the Coalition’s objectives of reducing the number of MPs while making the size of constituencies more equal. In the case of Calder Valley, they suggest moving Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward to Halifax constituency while adding Worth Valley to Calder Valley. I have urged them to think again. Worth Valley might look like a close neighbour of Calder Valley on a map but there are seven miles of moorland separating them and the two valleys have few ties. Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, on the other hand, are very much part of this area. Balance could be maintained by leaving Calder Valley as it is, Worth Valley being part of Keighley constituency and, for example, Queensbury, becoming part of Halifax constituency. ...
