Ed backs Doncaster speed awareness campaign

Labour leader Ed Miliband has backed a Doncaster petrol station’s speed reduction campaign. The ‘20 is plenty’ scheme – pioneered by road safety charity Brake and supported by Jet garages – asks drivers to pledge to drive at no more than 20mph in built-up areas to lower the risk of accidents and reduce pollution. Almost 3,000 people signed the petition at Jet’s Intake 4 garage on Doncaster Road in Mexborough, which was handed to Doncaster North MP Mr Miliband. Mr Miliband said: “Statistics show if you hit someone at 30mph they will probably die. But if they are hit by a car travelling at 10mph less, they will almost certainly live. “I hope that all drivers will have that in their mind whenever they are driving through residential areas and listen to the advice to slow down.” Between five and six children are killed or injured every day on the UK’s roads, according to Brake....
