Responsibility is the key to stop these riots happening again

Today I’ve seen the impact of last night’s violence and vandalism here in Manchester. I’ve seen the appalling acts that were committed and the impact they were having on this city. But I have also seen the true spirit of Manchester reflected in the 1,000 volunteers who have come out to clean up the city and say that violence will not win. Now the demand I’ve heard from people in this city is for an increased police presence and their Chief Constable has just assured me that there will be double the number of officers available to him tonight in Manchester because the first and most immediate priority must be to restore public order and to ensure that last night’s events are not repeated. There is a deeper issue that society is going to have to look at and understand: why do people commit these criminal acts?
