This morning I visited the offices of the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) to learn more about the appeal to help people suffering from severe food shortages in East Africa. The worst drought in 60 years in parts of East Africa has affected 10 million people. The situation in the Horn of Africa is deteriorating rapidly and the UN has announced famine in parts of Somalia for the first time in 19 years. 3.7 million people, almost half the country’s population, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance with one in three children suffering from malnutrition. Donations from the British public have now reached £27 million. This is a tremendous effort. Time and time again the British people have shown their generosity. This time has been no different.
