Tackling Britain's financial mess is the top priority for the Coalition Government, but even so climate change is the biggest long-term problem we have to deal with. So in a time of very painful financial constraint, we need to find the most cost effective and practical way of doing this. Buildings are it. We can spend all the money we want on electric cars, or providing alternative sources of energy, but if we don't tackle carbon emissions from buildings we'll hardly have made a start. Half of all the carbon emissions we produce come from buildings. New buildings have to be built to better standards, but even more important existing buildings must be improved with simple measures like loft insulation that don't cost a lot, but can cut carbon emissions and cut fuel bills as well.
