Hermon Vows to Keep Coastguard Services in Northern Ireland
Following the publication of the consultation document on the modernisation of Coastguard services, Lady Hermon has already begun the campaign to keep Coastguard services in Northern Ireland. The consultation period will run for 14 weeks and the North Down MP vowed to fight “to keep a highly-trained and well-equipped Coastguard presence based in Bangor.†Early today, Lady Hermon spoke to the Transport Minister in London, and commented afterwards: “When I spoke to the Minister, I made it abundantly clear that Northern Ireland must not be the only part of the United Kingdom left without a dedicated Coastguard centre. That's the bottom line. I've insisted that the Minister visits the Rescue and Coastguard team in Bangor early in the New Year to see for himself the exceptional services already provided by staff there.
