I've heard the statement and debate in the Commons on phone tapping. The Government is ducking many legitimate questions as if it has no responsibility. However the big question for parliament was posed by Chris Bryant. After the 1966 Seaman's strike, where several participants had their phones tapped, Parliament was promised by then Prime Minister Harold Wilson that any interception of MPs would be reported to the House. This became the Wilson Doctrine which led to a ban on the tapping of MPs’ and Peers’ 44 years later we have cases where MPs’ phones have been intercepted but not every member is aware of it. Chris Bryant can't even get the satisfaction of discovering what information was obtained from these taps. This is a clear breach of the Wilson Doctrine. If a Labour Prime Minister was prepared to give this assurance, why not this PM? Just as important...
