Is Israel lost on the road map?
Like most people who have been following the Middle East Peace Process for a while I thought that the long-term answer had long ago been sketched out: a two state solution with Israel recognising a Palestinian state in return for the neighbouring Arab states which haven't yet done so recognising Israel's right to exist; the Palestinian state to be based on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; a halt to Israeli settlements in the West Bank and some settlements to be withdrawn, a land swap to accommodate areas of disagreement leaving Israel broadly in its 1967 borders; a limited right of return for Palestinian refugees with generous compensation for those that cannot return; Jerusalem to be a shared capital and the holy sites to be under international, perhaps United Nations, protection (it is a quirk of fate, is it not, that some of Christianity's, Judaism's and Islam's holiest...
