Newport County triumphant
It's not easy to convey the joy that Newport is enjoying tonight. Newport County AFC were long the source of the city's pride. There were great moments of triumph in the past. But for 21 years, it's been a continuing decline. There was an odious episode involving a possible confidence tricksters. For a long period the club became the 'Exiles'. their home ground was at Morton in the Marsh eighty miles from Newport. This strained the loyalty of the hardcore of fans who travelled the long journey to see both their home and away games. An agonising choice on whether the County should join the Welsh League or continue in English leagues in order to fight their way into premier football.
