MP Backs High Speed Rail
Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, has enthusiastically welcomed Government plans, published today, to build a new high speed railway north from London to create a network linking the capital to Birmingham, Manchester, the East Midlands, Sheffield and Leeds, with trains running at up to 250 miles per hour. The Government says the development of a 335 mile 'Y'-shaped network would deliver journey times of 75 minutes or less from Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester to the capital. Speaking from Westminster, the MP said: "This is absolutely the right way forward. High speed rail will generate economic growth in the north of England. It is very exciting." The MP was a member of the Parliamentary Committee which, in the 1990s, approved High Speed One – the new railway which is now running from the Channel Tunnel into London Euston.
